3-2 last week in the Super Contest, 3-1-1 in College football. Westgate NFL Super Contest Picks, Westgate top and bottom 5 and two new political wagers posted.

We are heading into week 6 of the NFL and I sit at 15-9 in the Westgate NFL Supercontest or 60% after a 3-2 weekend in the contest last week. Sitting at 60% before the halfway point is not a bad place to be. Any type of run at this point and who knows:)

In College Football we went 3-1-1 this weekend bringing the season to date record to 14-9-1 or 60.8%. I started betting totals in college football this weekend also. Plays this weekend were: W Mich Under 57 W  Illinois Under 49 L E. Mich Under 57.5 W Ball St +105 W San Jose St +3 T.

In the NFL for Plays, I am 5-5-1 going 0-1 last week losing with the Jets +14. Often times plays are not always in my Westgate NFL picks.

My picks this week  in the Westgate NFL Supercontest are:

Cleveland +1

Jacksonville -1.5

Arizona +2.5

Denver -2

Minn -3

Another tough week for picking games. The week before was one of the toughest for me and this week was not that much different:)

The Westgate top 5 went 3-2 last week bouncing back from a 1-4 week. Their record to date is 14-11.

Rams

Jacksonville

Seattle

Minn

Dallas

I am with them on two of the top 5:(  and fading one of the top 5.

The bottom 5 picks are:

Giants

Miami

Balt

Wash

NE

On the political odds front, I cashed out my Netanyahu wagers for an 80% gain. (Why get greedy)

I made two new wagers this morning:

I wagered 57/43 on the Republican winning the LA gov. race and also wagered 65/35 on the Republican winning the KY Gov race. I view the Republican in LA at least a 2 to 1 favorite and in Ky  at least a 3 to 1 fav. Two nice overlays if I have it viewed correctly. I like to make wagers that are no more than a month out, as I do not like money sitting online for events over a year away.

There are plenty of good overlays on these as the media shape public opinion, and that creates betting opportunities. Especially when the odds are in part based upon media polling. Political wagering can be one of the most profitable forms of wagering you will find if you can keep your ideological bias out of it. If you cannot, it will break you:)

4-1 last week in the Super contest! Westgate NFL Super Contest Picks, Westgate Top and Bottom 5 posted.

We are heading into week 5 now of the NFL and I sit at 12-8 in the Westgate NFL Supercontest or 60% after a 4-1 weekend in the contest last week. A good spot to be heading into week 5.

Our blistering 73% win rate in college football came to a screeching halt this weekend with an 0-4 weekend. Bringing the season to date record in college football to 11-8 or 57.8%. That is a bit more realistic:) The ROI is 11.5%

This is the way sports betting goes. It tends to be streaky as in most forms of gambling. That is why I always recommend setting aside a bankroll you can afford to lose and then betting no more than 2% on each wager. 3% is much too high. Remember you are in this for the long haul. You do not measure results on one day:) You measure them on how you do in the long run. Its a hard concept for most, as gamblers, tend to live day to day. They also tend to wager more then they should.

I have a section on this site on top labeled required reading. If you gamble, it would benefit you to read it from time to time.

I have been around gamblers my entire life, and no matter how many times I express the importance of this, many will never grasp it. And if you do not grasp it, you cannot win, it’s as simple as that. An 0-4 day is nothing. To me, its an amusement more than anything else, as I know in the long haul I will be on the + side. I embrace variance and welcome it. After all, if it was easy anyone could do it:)

In the NFL plays are 5-4-1 after a 2-1 weekend last week. We won with Cleveland and Tenn and lost with Arizona.

My picks this week in the order I liked them at the time:

Denver +6.5

Indianapolis +11

Carolina -3.5

Atlanta +5

Tenn -3

This weekend was the toughest yet for me in coming up with picks. Denver was the only obvious pick. The rest, well a mishmash of what I thought was the best of the worst:) It will be interesting to see how I do today.

The Westgate top 5 finally crashed last week and went 1-4 bringing its record to 11-9.

Their picks this week are:

Bears

Minn

TB

NE

GB

I am not with or against any of the top 5 this week.

The bottom 5:

Wash

Jets

Rams

Cincy

Seattle

I am on none of these this week.

Letter From a Long Time Follower

“Rick,I am still amazed how you do it. I have followed you almost from the beginning not only from your posting on your website but also you time at 2+2 forums.

I have noticed a continuous improvement year to year in your methods. But the more remarkable thing to me is your persistence in educating and putting out your picks. Almost every site I am familiar with has gone by the wayside. Yet yours keeps getting stronger and stronger.

I have to ask “Where do you get your focus and energy” to keep this up?

You have taught me a lot over the years and I have gone from a “punter” to a reasonable handicapper. Whereas before I was a typical undisciplined sports bettor I am now very aware of the necessity of a disciplined approach. It has done wonders.

In addition, you’re going from a free site to a subscription based site was long overdue. I appreciate your keeping the membership fee low and not trying to “milk” money out of the sports bettors. I know there are many that would pay substantially more to follow your site.

But that goes hand in hand with your persona that you have established in the sports betting world. You most likely do not know it but your name “RickJ” is very well-respected as one of the leading handicappers in sports betting. In addition, your reputation for integrity is as high.

There are very few real things out there but you are definitely the real thing.

Again thank you for all you have done over the years.”

My Response:

It’s hard for me to respond to that as humble a person as I am:) But it’s emails like this that I get from time to time that help keep me motivated.

I have always said in the past that I approach sports handicapping the way crossword puzzle addicts approach their morning routine. I can not think of anything more challenging than trying to figure out EV on sports games.

As far as the subscription cost I have mentioned before my goal was to defer my expenses that keep rising every year as I get more advanced in my techniques. I look at subscribers as partners in this handicapping endeavor rather than customers. Subscribers help me defer my costs and allow me to justify keeping my expensive hobby going.

Thanks for the mail. It’s nice to know I am appreciated!
