Democracy is still kicking with the debates as entertaining as they have been since I can remember. No matter what side of the isle you are on or which candidate you support there is something for everyone to hate and enjoy.
As they say, Democracy is not supposed to me pretty but in the end its the best approach to governance.
The only problem I can see is that Humans as destructive a species as they are will for whatever reason destroy a good thing. Freedom and liberty.
Years ago when I was a voracious reader I read ” Metamagical Themas” by Douglas Hofstadter. Its a great book if your into the reasons behind what Humans do and how it relates to international issues. He essentially quantifies the unquantifiable!
One phrase that comes to mind as I view world events unfolding is his observation of “Creativity at the individual level and flirtation with self-destruction at the group level.”
For some reason, I have never forgotten the phrase or the book. It was written in 1985 but even more relevant today.
I do apologize from digressing but I assure you the above is no reflection of my views toward either political party or group. All are complicit in one form of another with this concept.After all, they are all human!
This relates to the markets in that it should be anticipated that things will not alway run the optimum way that is best for the world. So despite your best efforts, you cannot completely eliminate risk from nonlogical events.
An analogy would be a poker player that grinds out money day in and day out. But then for some inexplicable reason goes on tilt and not only blows what he has won over the years but ruins himself and goes broke. I have seen that play out time and again at the poker tables. The human mind is very weird that way:)
For whatever reason this morning the market is gapping up . Typically Gaps up are not the best environment for swing trade longs, however, the approach I use is to let things settle down the first 15 min or so and then evaluate breath and go from there.
On the geopolitical front things are far from settling down. One of the U.S. ships was fired upon in the Mideast and Russia has moved some tactical nukes closer to the borders. In addition, the rhetoric is heating up by Putin calling the U.S. a threat while the Democrats use Russia as a straw man for their political benefit.
That’s not a bad strategy but you would have to wonder if perhaps the way tensions are quickly approaching a breaking point between Russia and the U.S. that the time might not be right for this approach regardless of how effective it might be politically.
I would keep a close eye on this as if the first shot is fired by either Russia or the U.S. the markets are going to take a nosedive that will even surprise the most experienced in the markets.
