Friendship and poker revisited
I received quite a bit of email after my post about there being no friends in a poker game. I guess my comments might of been too extreme but its all a matter of semantics.
I have friends that I have known since college that I keep in touch with on a regular basis and if they asked me to sit down at the poker table with them I wouldn’t even consider it.
On the other hand I have got to know many people from the poker world over the years. Its amazing how many people I run into in Las Vegas that show up from time to time that I havnt seen for 20 years.! And its always nice to run into them and share stories and play again.
Are they friends? You could say they are but friends in the gambling world are in a different category then outside of it. Its a very unique friendship that poker players share. On the one hand they go out to dinner with each other, drink together , talk about the games and other players, have a good laugh from time to time, share bad beats but then….. at the poker tables try to take each others money the more the better. And relish in the thought that one of their “friends” might tilt and blow off a lot of money to them.
Its so unique that it would make a good sociological study. So the bottom line is in my opinion that yes you could call many of the poker players you play with over the years friends……but….with the caveat… that its a different type of friendship then the ones you have cultivated throughout your life outside of the gambling world.
