Still not much showing up today yet but since we are approaching the end of the ncaa tournament I thought I would share a betting story.
Through the years I have made some interesting bets at poker games. I used to play in a poker game in Danville, Illinois once a week. A person named Chester ran the game in a building he had behind his home. He had quite a business and never missed an opportunity to rake the pot!
At that time the basketball hero in that neck of the woods was Larry Bird. He played at Indiana State less then 100 miles from Danville. And Chester used to talk all the time about what a great player Bird was. And how Indiana State was a cinch to win the ncaa tournamen.
Of course always sensing an opportunity there was another player many miles away that was making just as big headlines at the time…. Magic Johnson!
Now I knew it would be tough to get a bet out of Chester since he was all business and had never made a sports bet in his life.
So I waited until he went on and on about Bird…and starting saying how I didn’t think Indiana State had a chance. Well I knew he wouldnt give me the field…so …. finally I told him I would take one team and if they happened to meet in the ncaa tournament I would bet him 1,000 on the game.
Well…..he took the bet and I took Michigan State with magic Johnson.
Then….. of course it was a long shot they would even meet up in the tournament and even more of a long shot when the pairings came out. The only way the game would be played was if they both got to the final game of the tournament for the championship.
Well every fan knows how this ends up. They both go all the way and they play each other for the the championship. And of course Michigan state won easily:)
Also as an interesting aside…..another person I know very well was booking at the time and he told me Chester called him up after the consolation game started and wanted to bet 1,000 on that game. Of course Chester who had never made a sports bet in his life…bet 1,000 on two games that day and lost them both.
I think I also noticed that chester was raking the pot a little heavier for a few weeks after that…although it might of been my imagination:)
