Each player plays differently compared to each other and also play differently compared to themselves at different times.
If you dont know how the players in the game play you are at a big disadvantage. The player makeup of the game dictates your style of play for the game and also how you play individual hands against each player.
Also you need to be able to put players on a range of hands. This requires you to know how players play. With some players that range can be well defined…but with others almost completely random!
How do you do this? When you are out of a hand watch the play and watch the hands when they are turned over. You also do this when your in the hand but many players talk and put there attention else where when they are not playing. If you pay attention to the play at all times you will pick up valuable information on the players.
What about the player who sits down who you have never played against. You would be amazed at how the good players can many times know the playing style of the player before they even play a hand! Sometimes your fooled..but not very often. In any event within a short period of time you should have a general idea of the range of hands the new player plays.
