Omaha 8
This is my favorite and best game. Its exciting and generates quite a bit of action. Also it seems to attract loose gambling type players.
Most books on omaha 8 feel that a good player has a higher earn rate then in other games. I have also found this to be true.
How to play? Well I dont want to give out any specific playing advice but I have found that Omaha 8 players can play many different styles of play and be a winning player at the middle limits. But beware…..the loose play most hand strategy is great when the cards are coming your way….but when the lights go out….and you dont adjust it can be brutal!!
I had my greatest win streak in omaha 8 playing 75-150 with a 100-200 kill. I played almost every hand and had an incredible 5 month rush. But then just as suddenly I couldnt make a hand for 3 months and lost about half of what I won back during that rush.
After that experience I had to rethink my omaha 8 strategy. I have come to the conclusion that it depends on your skill level as to after the flop play and in addition it depends on the makeup of your opponents. If the game is tight…you can be more aggressive with marginal hands in position. But if the game is the type where 5 or more players are seeing every flop….you had better be a nut nut player. The loose player can get killed in that type of game.
Also when you play a lot of omaha 8 you will see crazy things. You will see some of the loosest players who play terrible after the flop go on some incredible winning streaks. Dont think for a second that this is the correct way to play! The temptation will be there to succumb and play that way. Try to resist. One thing you can count on a year later that player will either being playing better or wont be around.
Short handed omaha 8 can be exciting also. Be prepared to play most hands in a 3 or 4 handed game and look to play them with position. In addition you had better be able to read your opponents and know there style of play.
When the game fills up after playing short handed its very tough to compensate immediately. But that is the mark of a good player…being able to adjust to playing conditions.
As in holdem you want to watch to see what your opponents limp with and raise with. Some players only raise with aa…you should know who these players are. Some always raise with a2…..you also should know who these players are. Some only raise when they have a2 and a 3 or 4 with there hand.
As to specific advice….there are many books on omaha 8 and I would suggest you read all of them if your going to play this game seriously for money.
