Online Poker
I have mixed feelings about online poker and usually it centers upon how I am running at the time. I am running well online now..so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Logically it seems that online play would be a bonanza for a good player. I use poker tracker and poker ace hud to keep track of the players stats. It seems to me you get many more loose players online then you do live.
In the live games a good game consists of 2 or 3 loose players but online often half the table play very loose.
But there is a big caveat to online play and that is CHEATING!!!!!
I know its hard to believe the human element would cheat:) But they do and they do it often. Collusion is probably the biggest cheating thats done where people share holdcards and team up in the same game. There is no way I know to stop this with online play. It happens and you just have to look for it and try to avoid it.
The way I try to avoid it is to play no higher then 15-30 online. If there is collusion at those levels its probably not very sophisticated.
Another thing to look out for is the house cheating. The argument is the house is making so much money why would they cheat. But human nature what it is there are many humans out there that if they could make more money on the square they would still cheat.
Also the house consists of employees…there was some cheating uncovered at one of the the poker rooms lately where an employee was helping some outside players view hold cards of other player.
One other mode of cheating that is prevalent is the time out. If you bet and another player wants to see the showdown without putting any more money in the pot they let themselves time out and they are all in!
This happens way more then it should. Make a note of who is doing this and it happens often with the same player report them to the house.
Finally the poker bots are now here. If you play much online you have probably seen advertisements for poker bots to play for you and help you get rake back. I have tried some of these lower priced ones on a free trial and they are not sophisticated enough to grind you out any money. But I am sure there are some programmers out there that have bots that are very sophisticated …not only that ….if there are 2 or 3 of these bots in the game sharing hole cards….it would make it almost impossible to beat.
So….the way you protect yourself is:
1. play at lower limits
2. keep track of your play and if after 2000 hours you are loser….seriously consider not playing online.
3. Make full use of deposit bonus’s and rake back
4. watch for unusual plays and note them in the players notes
5. get poker tracker and poker ace hud
